Conference Assistant

The Office of Residence Life reserves the right to dismiss a conference assistant at any time if the staff member fails to meet any of the qualifications or fails to fulfill his/her responsibilities.

Conference Assistant Qualifications

Employment

Conference assistants:
  • Must be a single student.
  • Will receive a background check, through Truescreen, before being hired for a position.
  • Must be available to complete desk training. Desk training will be scheduled at the employee's convenience during the month of April.
  • Are required to attend spring student check-in training on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 10:00 AM.
  • Are expected to work 30 to 40 hours per week. The 30 to 40 hour per week schedule begins on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
  • Move into their apartment/room on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
  • Are required to attend additional training sessions during the month of May -- dates to be determined.
  • May be required to transport themselves to the different housing areas (Helaman, Heritage, LISR, Riviera or Wyview Park) for job responsibilities.
  • May be asked to stay temporarily in another hall or Residence Life housing area. This would be due to a Residence Hall being used to house conference guests of a different gender.
  • Will be expected to work on holidays (i.e. Memorial Day, July 4th, Juneteenth, and Pioneer Holiday) and weekends.
  • May not accept other positions or make commitments that interfere with their employment responsibilities; i.e. additional employment, traveling/performing groups, etc.
  • Employment ends on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 5:00 PM.

Academics

  • It is preferred that conference assistants are not enrolled in classes for spring and summer terms.
  • If conference assistants desire to be enrolled in classes, it is preferred that their classes be scheduled between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Conference assistants should review their desired class schedule with their area manager before signing up for classes.
  • If a conference assistant will not be enrolled in classes for the upcoming fall semester, it is required (by Student Employment) that the employee be enrolled in three credit hours for either spring or summer term in order to be a student employee.
  • Conference assistants cannot have a class from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Tuesdays.

Scheduling

Conference assistants:
  • Must be available to work scheduled hours—schedules may be subject to last-minute changes.
  • Schedules will vary from week to week according to conference needs — conference assistants must remain flexible to schedule changes.
  • Will be scheduled for on-call responsibilities — on-call time is not restricted to the premises but must be available to respond to guests needs within a reasonable time.
  • Must attend staff meeting each week on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 PM.

Compensation

Spring/Summer 2025 compensation includes room, meal plan, plus an hourly wage of $12.20.

Conference Assistant Responsibilities

Conference assistants:
  • Represent and promote a positive image of Residence Life, Brigham Young University, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Abide by the Honor Code, the Dress and Grooming Standards, and Housing Guidelines.
  • Help with guests conduct concerns. Encourage guests to follow all BYU and summer conference guidelines.
  • Maintain a positive work environment with coworkers through mutual respect, emotional intelligence, and work ethic.
  • Staff the front desk as needed to support desk attendant schedule.
  • Check conference guests into their buildings, providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Perform significant physical tasks for up to 5 hours at a time (with breaks) indoors and outdoors. Perform unsupervised repetitive tasks with diligence and efficiency. Examples include: climbing stairs, roving a housing area, assisting guests, completing assigned projects, etc. A few examples of projects include: move furniture, place mattresses, touch-up painting, put together RA welcome kits, complete apartment inventories, etc.
  • Maintain daily contact with management (i.e. the hall advisors and/or area managers) to report special needs, guest concerns, damages, maintenance repair needs, or emergencies relative to conference guests.
  • Assist with conference guest check-outs and building preparation; i.e. collection of keys, key inventories, collection of linens and towels, trash removal, removal of lost items, assess damages, re-set buildings with linens and towels, assist Building Operations staff with any needed duties, assist hall advisors in walking floors, and other duties as assigned, etc.
  • Promote safety and security. Perform security roves in pairs as late as 1:30 AM.
