Moving Out

Termination Notice - Submit at least 30 days prior to moving out

  • All tenants must submit an online Termination Notice at least 30 days prior to vacating their dwelling.
  • Tenants whose Termination Notice has been received will receive an acknowledgement message and further instructions on their message board.
  • Tenants who provide less than 30 days' notice will be liable for rent and electric charges for 30 days after their Termination Notice is received, or until someone else moves into the dwelling, whichever occurs first. Dwellings will be posted online as soon as possible, but will not be available for a new tenant to move-in for a minimum of five to six business days after the dwelling is vacant to provide adequate time for custodial and maintenance to prepare the dwelling.
  • Tenants who wish to move out sooner than their submitted date may submit a Petition for 30-Day Liability Decrease.
  • Any requests to modify or withdraw a Termination Notice must be approved by the Housing Review Board. Petitions may be found under "Petitions and Forms" in the "Families" tab. For more information, students should contact the Campus Accommodations Office at 801-422-2611 or through the message board.
  • All personal property must be removed and all cleaning must be completed no later than midnight on the move-out date indicated on the Termination Notice.
    • Any personal belongings left behind will be considered abandoned and will be removed and disposed of.
    • Tenants will be charged a disposal fee for abandoned items, and will be charged damage and/or cleaning fees if the dwelling is not left clean and in good condition.

Graduating Tenants

  • Graduating tenants are required to submit a Termination Notice to end their agreement.
  • Because graduating students are required to move out by a certain date, they must submit an online Termination Notice at least 30 days prior to vacating their dwelling.

Move-Out Day

  • All personal property must be removed and all cleaning must be completed no later than midnight on the move-out date indicated on the Termination Notice.
  • Tenants will be charged at a rate of 10 times the normal daily rate of their agreement for each additional day that they stay past their move-out date.
  • Any personal belongings, furniture, or trash left behind in the dwelling, balcony, stairwell, and/or storage lockers will be removed and disposed of, and tenants will be charged a removal fee.
  • Tenants will be charged damage and/or cleaning fees if the dwelling is not left clean and in good condition.
  • In order to avoid move-out charges, tenants should:
    • Put all trash inside the dumpster; DO NOT place inside or leave furniture out by the dumpsters.
    • Check behind and in all drawers, closets, and shelves (wipe as needed).
    • Clean any other areas in the dwelling that may be dirty.
    • Lock the windows and doors and turn off all the lights in the dwelling upon departure.
    • If moving out during the summer months, turn off the thermostat.
    • If moving out during the winter months, set the thermostat to 65 degrees.
    • Leave all dwelling and mail keys on the kitchen countertop.
    • A charge for re-keying will be assessed for all lost keys or keys not returned upon termination of The Rental Agreement.

Cleaning Checklist

  • A "Check-Out Requirements" document will be delivered to tenants’ dwelling within two to four business days after they submit their Termination Notice. It will inform them of their move-out responsibilities.
  • Tenants who do not receive a "Check-Out Requirements" document may obtain the document at the area housing office. This will help identify what is required and may help avoid cleaning charges.
  • Tenants who have specific cleaning questions, may contact the Wymount Terrace Custodial Supervisor at 801-422-4180, or the Wyview Park Custodial Supervisor at (801-422-9247).
  • A final inspection will be done after the dwelling is vacated.
  • Please note the following cleaning guidelines (This list is not meant to be all-inclusive. Tenants may contact the area office for more information):

Bathroom

  • Shower/Tub: Scrub the shower stall and tub with non-abrasive cleanser and rinse thoroughly.
  • Toilet: Clean the interior and exterior of the toilet, including seat and around the base.
  • Vanity:
    • Clean the sink and mirror, including all soap and hard-water spots (mixing white vinegar with warm water one to one is a good, inexpensive solution for hard-water spots).
    • Clean the medicine cabinet (inside and outside).
  • Floor: Sweep and scrub all linoleum and tile surfaces, especially around the edges and corners.

Electrical Fixtures

  • Light Bulbs: Replace any burned-out incandescent light bulbs and call Auxiliary Maintenance (801-422-4411) to replace fluorescent bulbs before move-outs.
  • Fixtures: Clean glass fixtures, light-switch plates, and electrical sockets.

Kitchen

  • Floor: Sweep and scrub all vinyl and tile surfaces, especially around the edges and corners.
  • Range/Stove:
    • Clean stove burners and surface underneath (lift up/off for cleaning under burner). South Wymount range tops can be completely removed and placed on the counter.
    • Broiler pan, range exterior, and range hood (top, underneath, and filter).
    • Don't take the boiler pan out of the dwelling.
    • South Wymount: The oven needs to be completely cleaned. The oven is NOT self-cleaning. Oven cleaner is permitted (and in most cases required), but be sure to wipe off residue from oven cleaner.
    • North Wymount & Wyview Park: Oven is self-cleaning. Use the self-clean cycle, and then clean out the residue left behind. Do not use oven cleaner!
  • Refrigerator:
    • Clean inside and out, including the seal around the doors.
    • Clean all trays and shelves.
    • Crisper shelf and drawers should be removed for cleaning and then placed inside again.
    • Leave the refrigerator running with doors closed.
  • Sink and Counters:
    • Remove scuff marks and water spots and rinse well to remove soap residue.
    • Scrub cabinets inside and out, including drawers, shelves, and doors.

Living Room, Halls, & Bedrooms

  • Dust, pick up, and vacuum all carpets.

Walls, Doors, & Door Frames

  • Clean pencil, crayon, food, and/or grease marks from the walls, doors, and door frames (but don't scrub so hard that paint is removed).
  • Wall Damage: Damage charges will be assessed for wall damage from screws, tacks, pins, picture hangers, stick-ons, tape, nails, etc. Spackle or patch marks are considered wall damage, and toothpaste used in nail holes will be charged for removal and repair. Tenants are allowed four nails holes per room, but will be charged for any additional nail holes or wall damage.

Window Frames

  • Clean all windows inside and out, including sills, frames, tracks, and screens.
  • Dust and clean all leveler blinds; call Maintenance (801-422-4411) to have any bent/broken/missing slats repaired.

Deposit Refund

  • The $100 deposit tenants paid with the rental agreement will be refunded to the tenant’s university account and applied to any unpaid charges within 30 days of the liability date. Remaining balances will be sent by check or direct deposit.
  • Tenants will be notified on their message board on the housing website of any cleaning/damage/replacement charges.
  • Tenants should keep their myBYU mailing address and bank information updated to ensure any remaining amount of their security deposit is sent to the correct address or bank account.
