Wyview Park October Of the Months

The following of students distinguished themselves by performing acts of service in October.

Hannah Bates

I have chosen to nominate Hannah Bates as the October student of the month. Hannah is a very talented individual. Hannah is a Hinckley scholar here at BYU, and has taken nine AP classes prior to college. There are only fifty students who receive the Hinckley Scholar award.  She is majoring in clarinet and hoping to be accepted into the music program next year. Hannah is in the highest wind symphony here at BYU, as a freshman, and is in the top five of the clarinet section. She is also in one of the orchestras here at BYU. Hannah is not only very intellectually and musically talented but she is very service oriented. Hannah is a tutor helping students prepare for the ACT test. Hannah also serves as the first assistant to the president of chapter ninety-four, in Provo, Utah, of one of the largest relief organizations in the world. Hannah works hard to serve and help everyone around her. She is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She is the oldest of eleven children and is a great role model and example to all her siblings. I chose Hannah this month because despite her very busy schedule, she took time to stop and do everyone’s dishes in her apartment for that week. She had many tests that week, but she knew we were all busy so she took the time to help us. This is just a small example of how Hannah serves everyone. She is one of the most happy and positive people I have ever met. She is always smiling and laughing. You never see here down or discouraged. As amazing as she already is, Hannah is constantly striving to be better. Hannah deserves to be recognized for her many amazing achievements.

Kimberly Packard

Kimberly Packard, an 18-year-old Resident Assistant in Wyview Halls at Brigham Young University, is younger than most of her residents, but you wouldn’t know it. She is mature, responsible, and one of the most successful RAs at BYU. On the first day of the semester, she greeted her residents (“my girls”) with a “get-to-know-you” survey and a list of tips for being a successful student. Every Sunday afternoon she holds a Community Standards meeting to address the concerns of her residents, discuss upcoming events, and encourage open communication.

Every month Building Administration conducts cleaning checks to ensure proper upkeep of the apartments. In the month of September, Kimberly’s building won the “golden plunger” award for having the cleanest apartments in her area. Rather than simply let the award speak for itself, Kimberly went above and beyond the call of duty and wrote a note to each apartment thanking them for their hard work, baked cookies, and then individually delivered the gifts.

Kimberly is under a lot of stress, balancing school, work, and the responsibility of caring for 39 girls. Undaunted by the task, however, Kimberly works hard to maintain a positive attitude, earning the nickname “sunshine” from her roommates.

Kimberly is very concerned for the welfare of each and every one of her girls. She plans monthly activities designed to meet their needs, including such themes as “stress relief” to help the girls successfully endure midterms, and “princess in training,” to “help each girl recognize their divine potential and feel God’s love for them.”

Kimberly loves to bake, sing, and dance. She loves to share her unique talents. An avid and very talented photographer, Kimberly decorated her apartment with her own photographs. One of her roommates says “when I first saw the pictures, I thought they came with the frame!”

She knows how to enjoy the simple things in life and wants to share that joy with each of her girls. “Being a resident assistant is about helping my girls have the best college experience possible,” she says. “We have a lot of fun.”
