Stephanie RirieFrom the first time I met Stephanie Ririe I knew I liked her. She is one of those people who always have a smile on their face and are always happy and helping. So it was no big surprise when I found out about her latest good deed. Stephanie’s roommate—and my friend—Tia Dunkley, had the flu last week and could barely function let alone keep up in her studies. Stephanie and Tia share a bunk bed in which Tia has the top bed. When she realized how draining it was for Tia to climb up into bed every night, Stephanie took the liberty of moving Tia’s whole mattress down to the floor to make it easier for her. I was so impressed by this act that I knew Stephanie needed to be honored as student, if not roommate, of the month. Submitted by: Michelle Mettenet |

Courtney FowlerCourtney Fowler is an exemplary young woman. Her willingness and generosity were especially shown in this last month of January. Courtney is an overall enjoyable person. She makes all those around her feel comfortable. Her laidback and easy-going personality shows that she’s accepting of everyone. She creates a comfortable atmosphere everywhere she goes. I’ve also witnessed Courtney volunteer to take the load from others multiple times in January. She shows initiative through her readiness to take action. In January, Courtney’s roommate, Kallie, became sick. Courtney made meals for Kallie and did a variety of everyday tasks to help Kallie. The two girls later found out that Kallie had contracted mononucleosis. This didn’t stop Courtney in any way. She could have decided to keep her distance; but instead, Kallie carefully took even more loving care of her roommate. She gave up her bed for Kallie because it was difficult for her to get on the top bunk of their bunk bed. She also gave up her room and let Kallie rest whenever she needed. This kind and caring action has not stopped. Even though Kallie is recovering, Courtney is still taking care of her friend and making sure that she gets all the help that she needs. Not only has Courtney been amazing in this task, but she’s been humble about it all. Courtney’s kindness has made me want to be as good of a friend as she has been. She’s shown how to go the extra mile in serving others and has been an amazing example.

Renee TrainorI am nominating Renee Trainor as the January student of the month. Ever since I met Renee she has been one of the sweetest people I know. She is always very friendly to everyone and is someone you could always turn to. I chose to nominate her for January because she has been so helpful to me this month. Even when a quiz was coming up Renee was more than willing to help me out by giving me her notes to copy for a day I missed. Without even calling to ask if I wanted them she stopped by and dropped them off. I was really busy at the time and a few days went by and I still had them. She even took the effort to stop by again and see if I had copied them and if I understood everything that was covered. She took time out of her really busy schedule to make sure I got and understood the notes. She even dropped them off and picked them up. Renee sacrificed her notes during a quiz time so I would do better. She is very selfless in all she does. She is a great example to everyone around of what a true friend should be like. Spotlight of the Month - Kelly OwenDuring the month of January, 2008, Kelly showed evidence of selflessness and service. Her job is to keep our council on track and to guide us in the right direction as we plan programs for our residents. This month, however, she went above and beyond her call of duty. Our council has been very overwhelmed by different programs we’ve planned and, as a result, have had very little time to do advertising. Without even a thought to herself, Kelly passed out over half of the fliers to all of the buildings in our apartment complex for two different activities! This was a great relief to our small council of six, who found the job of passing out fliers to each of our 1300 residents a bit much. However, Kelly did by herself what we six considered a great accomplishment. This story of selflessness and service, done without want of recognition, is one small example of Kelly’s overall capability and willingness to serve. She made manifest this value of service in the month of January by helping out her council when the going got rough. Kelly is an amazing person that would be a great candidate for spotlight of the month. Submitted by: Amber Whiteley |
