Helaman Halls

Helaman Halls January Of the Months

This group of students distinguished themselves by performing acts of service in January.

Chipman Hall - Adrianne Carson

Adri serves as a resident assistant to the students living on the 1100 floor of Chipman Hall. She works tirelessly to serve in this position to the best of her ability. Adri not only pays particularly close attention to the residents in her hall and their individual needs, but she also dedicates much of her time to her schoolwork which she takes very seriously. She attained a 4.0 gpa last semester. Adri is currently working in her major of Early Childhood Education to become a teacher. She has a great love for children and a thorough knowledge of the subject.

Adri has always possessed an out-of-the-ordinary dedication to honesty and integrity in her personal, professional, and educational life. She has proven this in the way she handles her responsibilities as a Resident Assistant and as a friend. It can be a challenging relationship to be both, but Adri shows tremendous respect for both sides of her job by striving to hold fast to the principles outlined in the BYU Honor Code, while always doing what is best for the girls on her floor.

Just recently Adri was faced with the difficult decision of choosing to keep a friend or do her job. It was one of the hardest she has ever had to make and the way she handled it showed her great character. It is her obligation and duty as an RA to report or do certain things and this conflicted with one of the friendships she has with a resident. Adri honored her obligation as an RA, well-knowing the consequences for the friendship. The true conviction to her word has exhibited Adri’s moral strength and shows the example of what a truly dedicated student should be.

Adri has shown genuine care for each girl on her floor and striven to build strong personal connections with each one. She always has a strong turnout to her floor meetings and she works hard to keep the girls informed while remaining open and friendly with each. Adri is easy to confront with problems and works hard to build and mend relationships. Her compassion towards others is shown immensely through the way she interacts with others.

David John Hall - Jordan Pearce

Jordan Pearce is an outstanding example to all who come in contact with her. A Hinckley scholar, a 4.0 GPA first semester at BYU, and an avid server to the community, she truly deserves to be recognized.

During the month of January, Jordan began giving service at Jamestown Nursing Home in addition to her participation in the T.O.P.s program last semester. She remarkably made an instant connection with the elderly and made all feel special and loved. At the nursing home, a volunteer can visit the citizens or participate in activities. When visiting with the citizens, Jordan became involved in their lives even for that brief moment. She laughed and cried and smiled with them and all their amazing life stories. At the end of each visit all the citizens thought of Jordan as a granddaughter. Not once has Jordan complained about serving others, but relished in the opportunity to give back to the world for all she has been blessed with.

Jordan's goal at BYU is to get into the rigorous competitive Nursing program. Her hard-working personality and extremely intelligent mind will help her succeed in this goal. Jordan was among the few freshmen to receive the coveted Hinckley scholarship and keep her scholarship by attaining a 4.0 GPA. For many freshmen their first semester is a rough transition to college, but she handled it beautifully and pulled off the grades that everyone wishes they had achieved.

Not many women on campus can be found like Jordan. Jordan is kind to all, intelligent, involved, and well-rounded in life. When observed in a social setting or just walking to campus, Jordan can be seen smiling at everyone who passes by, brightening their day. She has a warm-hearted, compassionate personality with a determination to serve in the world and help those less-fortunate. The world, or at least the world of BYU, is a better place because of Jordan Pearce.

Taylor Hall - 2100 Floor

In the month of January, the women in the 2100 wing of Taylor Hall in Helaman Halls at Brigham Young University put on an amazing program.  Eight new girls moved into the wing and for most of them it was their first semester.  Each wing of the halls in Helaman Halls has a floor council that is in charge of putting on programs for the floor to help fulfill their wings theme for the year.  The floor council planned to have a signs program.  All of the girls came and made name signs for their doors and location wheels.  One of the main goals of this program was to unite the girls of 2100.

This program was also a way for the new women to be recognized and to be able to get to know the other women on the floor.  This has brought unity on the 2100 floor.  This program has had a long lasting affect on the women because the location wheels help everyone know where each other is.  As I am living on the 2100 wing, this program has helped me tremendously because I have been able to know where people are in case of emergency and to be able to get a hold of friends.  This program has fulfilled social and diversity needs of the floor.  It allowed each woman to be creative in their own way and has fulfilled its goal of unity.

Council Member of the Month - Lauren Lytle

Lauren Lytle is an outstanding young woman in every aspect. She is always cheerful and never fails to say hi to anybody who walks by her. Her optimistic attitude is contagious and this is evident in everything she does. Lauren is involved in many events on and off campus. She is a dedicated member of Brigham Young University’s Residence Halls Association. She does her job as publicist with zeal and a hardworking ethic. In the month of January, Lauren spearheaded a needs based program targeted at new students who just entered BYU for the winter semester.  She suggested that the RHA council organize a new students’ breakfast in order to help them get to know each other and to give them an opportunity to ask questions about dorm and college life. As with all the other programs she has been involved in, Lauren made sure that everything, from the invitations down to the prizes, was prepared,

Apart from being a committed member of RHA, Lauren is also a valued member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, which is a nationally recognized organization that trains college students to engage competently in PR settings.  She writes the newsletter for them and always does a good job.

Lauren not only demonstrates her leadership skills in nation wide organizations such as RHA and PRSSA, she also strives to improve the relations of on-campus residents by being in charge of a little group gathering that meets every Monday night, akin to a small “family” that makes sure that every member is taken care of and does not feel lost.

Lauren does well at school and uses her talent and valuable time to organize events that will better the lives of those around her. She is one who deserves to be recognized not only for everything she’s done but also for everything she embodies.

Spotlight of the Month - Tyla Waxter

Tyla Waxter is the student coordinator for Helaman Halls and it is her job to help the Residence Halls Associate facilitate meetings, plan events, figure out logistics, meet with the executive committee, buy supplies, and just help make sure everything runs smoothly. She always goes beyond her job description to make sure the residence and RHA are happy. She makes the needs of Helaman Halls a priority, in order to make sure everyone has fun and is happy.

Every program that we have Tyla, spends many extra hours working in her office to help us. For example, during December, Helaman Halls had their large invitational program, Tyla stayed until midnight on many occasions, came in between classes, came early in the morning in order to make sure decorating the Cannon Center occurred properly and efficiently. She could have easily delegated the responsibility, but she cares for the residents so much that she wanted everything to turn out flawless. She made sure we had every supply we needed and that all areas looked just as planned.

Another example of Tyla’s willingness to go above and beyond was evident when she cleaned the council room in the basement of the Cannon Center. This is the room where the RHA make posters and signs and keep all of the supplies that have been used over the years. The room was a disaster with glitter, paint, Christmas decorations, paper, and other random objects cluttering the floor; it wasn’t something that was required of her and it was definitely something that she could have delegated to another RHA member, but she did it and made it looked spotless.

Tyla is kind, helpful, hardworking, and considerate. It always amazes me how much she does for us, and how little we recognize her.
